M 02 - Dortmund's EU Mission

In its Green Deal, the European Commission has set itself the goal of becoming climate neutral. The EU's Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission is designed to help achieve this. It is one of five "missions" - a new mechanism for the 2021-2027 funding period through which funding is to be focused on major socio-economic challenges. The city of Dortmund applied and is one of 100 cities in Europe selected in 2022. The cities are currently working on implementation ideas and creating "Climate City Contracts" together with local stakeholders. The content is about both sustainable energy generation and reduced emissions. The fields of action range from construction to mobility, agriculture, food and the circular economy. The selected cities exchange ideas in order to learn from each other and are also supported by city networks such as Eurocities. Dortmund has a project partnership with the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

In this master project you can investigate the processes as well as develop your own ideas for Dortmund's EU mission. Through which incentives does the EU try to achieve its goals? How can cities like Dortmund use the EU mission to implement their own Strategic Plans (e.g. Action Program Climate-Air 2030)? What can they learn from networking with other European cities? How can Dortmund become climate neutral by 2030? What can you contribute?
